American Horror Story Hotel: Season 5 Episode 2 'Chutes and Ladders'

Elizabeth The Countess played by Lady Gaga

The murders in Hotel Cortez is far from over. This episode gave us a back story of Elizabeth and the mysteries surrounding the history of the hotel.

The episode begins with Sally having a smoke in her room, she walks up to her bed and begin to stitch up her mattress with dead Gabriel in it. Only Gabriel isn't dead, yet. So now we've solved the mystery of the gruesome creature that crawled out of the mattress and attacked the tourists.

Her stitching is interrupted by the noise coming from the mysterious room where the second Swedish girl is been held. The ghostly children drain her blood and Liz Taylor (played by Denis O'Hare) takes the corpse and tosses it down the secret tunnel along with the dead bodies in the last episode.
Turns out the children don't spend all their day running around the hallways and playing their classic video games, they're also a food source for Elizabeth. Iris drains them and serves it to her and Donovan.

Will Drake organizes his first fashion show at hotel Cortez. Naomi Campbell guest stars as Claudia Bankson, a representative of Vogue Magazine. Tristan Duffy (played by Finn Wittrock) is a junkie model who's runway performance didn't go unnoticed especially for Elizabeth, who is drawn to Tristan's rage and need.

After he quits his modeling career, Tristan breaks into Elizabeth's room to steal drugs but gets caught by Donovan. He manages to escape from his claws. He meets James March (played by Evan Peters) while trying to steal his jewelries in his room. Elizabeth later turns Tristan into a vampire, the kind that slashes their victims not bite. She calls it a special virus. No wonder she's been around since 1904 and still glowing.

It turns out that James Patrick March built the hotel, a story Iris tells Detective Lowe who demands to know what happens in the hotel. In 1925, March built a torture chamber. He was a psychopathic series killer who designed hidden passageways and doors with no exits, asbestos-lined walls to hide the screams. Miss Evers was his accomplice who doesn't mind cleaning the stains. He would have gotten away if not for the anonymous tip to the police. His wife is a suspect, perhaps to inherit his fortune. The day of his arrest, he killed himself and also loyal servant, Miss Evers before the police could break down the door. The mysterious Room 64 was once the office of March.

Back to the Lowes. During the fashion show, Scarlett sneaks away with Lachlan, she sees her brother, Holden, along with three children sleeping in coffins kept in a white room downstairs. She tells her parents about it and even took a burly picture of him but they didn't believe her since they've spent hours looking for her, thinking she was missing.

Detective Lowe finds a breakthrough in the murder case after someone delivers a blood-covered statue to his office. Turns out someone decides to pick up where March left off. The Ten Commandment killer. He notices a pattern in the recent murders is in reference to the ten commandments in the bible.

Thoughts

I sense a connection between March and Elizabeth, the similarities? They're still alive even when March killed himself in 1925, perhaps she's the mystery wife who likes to watch while he kills his victims, she was the previous owner after all before the fashion designer, Will Drake bought it.

I'm glad to see Finn Wittrock, his character blew me away in freak show but I don't see him lasting for the whole season, his character is a ticking time bomb, a reckless one. I'm curious to see what happens to Donovan now that he's cast out by Elizabeth. He's the exact opposite of Tristan, perhaps she grew tired of his personality.
