American Horror Story Hotel Season 5 Episode 4: Hotel 'Devil's Night'

Peter Evans as 'James Patrick March'

This episode is creepy and terrifying at the same time. Evan Peters' portrayal of James Patrick March is amazing. It's definitely my favourite character of his so far. In a twisted way I'm actually rooting for him.
This episode gave us a backstory of March's trusted maid and ally, Hazel Evers, and also gave us a terrifying version of Halloween in Hotel Cortez.

It's the day of Halloween, a guest checks into the hotel for the 'Devil's Night' Soiree, an event in which the most notorious serial killers gather to celebrate their crimes. The guest turns out to be Richard Ramirez (Anthony Ruivivar), a serial killer who died in prison in 2013. Liz who's now in charge of the reception, leads him to a room. A present from Mr. March is waiting for him. Ramirez sneaks through window into the room where a couple are quietly asleep on the bed. He beats the man to death with a lamp then tries to strangle the wife. She manages to escape but runs into March in the hallway and her chances of survival hit zero.

Evers shares a tragedy from her past with Lowe. Her son was kidnapped in his Halloween ghost costume by a serial killer. By the time the police caught him, Evers' son was already dead in a mass child murder. That explains her obsession with white sheets since that was the last image she had of her son. I still think she's crazy though.

Alex takes Holden back to the house to examine him. Holden tells her he's thirsty. She goes to the kitchen to fetch him juice but comes back to find Scarlett's dog dead on the floor and Holden sucking his blood. Holden tells her she wants to see his 'other mummy' and leads her to Elizabeth. She accuses Elizabeth of kidnapping her son but Elizabeth blames Lowe for neglecting Holden claiming he came to her willingly and she saved him. She offers her a chance to join them, to spend eternity with her son. Hesitant at first but later agrees.

Lowe goes to have a drink at the bar. He meets Aileen Wuornos (played by Lily Rabe), a serial killer that was executed in 2002. Intoxicated Lowe takes her to his room but Wuornos knocks him out. He wakes up tied to a chair. Wuornos tries to kill him but he breaks free and handcuffs her in his bathroom. He goes to the reception and confronts Liz about Wuornos. He thinks it's a crazy woman in a costume. Liz hand him an invitation to the annual Devil's night from Mr. March.

At the dinner, Lowe meets other serial killers, John Wayne Gacy (played by John Carroll Lynch), the Zodiac Killer, and Jeffrey Dahmer (played by Seth Gabel). He witnesses them murdering a man Sally brought to room and passes out. He wakes up in an empty room and see Sally who manages to convince him that he was hallucinating the whole thing.

Thoughts

I'm still anxious to know the connection between Elizabeth, March and the Hotel. The privacy there is so discreet, you murder someone and everyone goes about their business.
Alex's decision to be with her son no matter what is a selfish one. She didn't even consider her daughter even if she has fallen out of love with Lowe.

March and his band of serial killers was an interesting scene. I'm so glad to see Lily Rabe, even though she's a special guest star. She, Evan Peters, Jessica Lange are my favourites characters. This season just gets twisted every week.
