This 42minutes episode gave us some interesting revelations. I've always wondered more about Elizabeth's past and this episode satisfied my curiosity. It's just amazing how well they've developed Lady Gaga's character, It makes me not to miss Jessica Lange so much. Now to the recap.
Construction begins at the Hotel Cortez. Drake and his son, Lachlan take a walk around the hotel, this gives Drake the opportunity to tell his son about his relationship with Elizabeth. This confuses the poor boy because his dad likes men but he just tells him that adults are complicated when it comes to relationships.
Two constructions workers as they break down the wall, finds a secret passage hidden within. As they move closer, they're attacked by a man and woman. The man is quite familiar, at first I thought it was Tristan Duffy but then I realize it's just Finn Wittrock's other character, Rudolph Valentino. Iris alerts Elizabeth about the construction workers murdered, both unaware of the culprits behind it but one thing they're certain of is that these culprits are wondering around the hotel which is bad for business and her plans also.
Flashback to 1925, Elizabeth meets actor, Rudolph Valentino, when playing an extra on the set of his movie. She becomes attracted to him and realizes the feeling is mutual when he invites her over for dinner. From dinning they dance, enjoying each other's company but interrupted by Valentino's wife, Natacha Rambova (Alexandra Daddario). Elizabeth thought she would be offended seeing them both as she walks towards the door to leave. Natacha reveals divorce is the only way they can been together because the studio didn't approve of them and invites her into the relationship which she agrees.
Elizabeth and her friend attend a party by the owner of hotel Cortez, James Patrick March. It was during the party that one of the guests announces the death of Valentino. Devastated, Elizabeth decides to kill herself by jumping out of the window but March arrives just in time to save her. Three unknown women visit Valentino's grave and one of them brings up the stories of the mysterious lady in black that drops a rose at his grave site.
During their discussion, they notice a woman in black coming towards them and leaves. The lady turns out to be Elizabeth. She drops a rose on his grave, she turns around and sees Natacha and Valentino. Valentino tells her that he faked his death because he has been reborn. His stunt double was actually the one killed. Natacha congratulates her on her marriage to March. She explains that she made that decision because she was lonely. She was also aware of his dark habits but didn't mind as long as she has riches and comfort.
Valentino explains that during his tour promoting his movie, he spots a mysterious man always looking at him. He realizes that the mysterious man is a German director who gave him a chance to be immortal. He tells her he wants to share that life with her and proposes she runs away with them the next day. Unknown to them, March was downstairs listening to their conversation.
The next day, Elizabeth waits at the train station for hours but Valentino never showed up. She assumes they left but she didn't realize that March sent his henchmen to beat Valentino and Natacha unconscious. Valentino wakes up and realizes he's sealed in a room with Natacha at the Cortez.
Back to the present, Valentino and Natacha attack more guests at the hotel to quench their thirst for blood and also revive their beauty. Natacha blames Elizabeth for what happened but Valentino was certain she had nothing to do with it.
March prepares an unplanned dinner for Elizabeth. Both agreed to have dinner once every month but this time, she arrives a week earlier. Elizabeth informs him of her plans to marry Drake. He suggests that she murders him outside the hotel when the time comes so as not to add to the list of people that is trapped in the hotel for eternity. To further hurt her, he reveals what he did to her one true love, Valentino. He tells her he knew about their affair and even plans to run away with him, that's why he trapped him in the walls of the hotel.
Meanwhile, Lowe uses his recent mental breakdown to check into a hotel clinic. Turns out that he saw the name of the clinic in some of the evidence files regarding the case of the ten commandment killer. Later that night, he breaks into the restricted ward and approaches one of the patients who is a little girl due to his theory that she's connected to the case. It turns out that she knows who the killer is and was a witness to all the murders. She was turned by Elizabeth back in 1986 when her dad stopped by the Cortez and left her in the car. She tell Lowe she will take him to the killer if he can get her out of the institution. After they escape, she tells him they'll find to go back to the Cortez to see the killer. When she realizes what Lowe plans to do when he finds him, she jumps in front of moving bus.
