We waited for four month using our imagination to predict what's next for TV's most scandalous couple and finally they're back. It's not even mid season and the destruction created is so big and may be irreparable.
Episode 1 'Heavy is the Head.'
The episode begins from where we left off at the season finale. Sally Langston, the ex-vice president is doing what she knows best, criticizing Fitz's administration on her 'Liberty Report,' while Olivia and Fitz are too pre occupied in the bedroom and from the looks of it, they don't plan on getting out for a while.
The White House prepares for a visit from the Queen Elizabeth of Caldonia and her family in other to convince her to build an airforce base in their country. As Fitz waits for her decision, tragedy struck as the Princess Emily of Caldonia was killed in an accident along with her driver. The family hires Olivia to handle the situation but unfortunately, paparazzi have already taken pictures of the bodies ready to publish.
Meanwhile Mellie is been ignored by Fitz. First she wasn't invited to state dinner organized for the Royal family then refuses to attend her swearing in as Senator but changes his mind the last minute, thanks to Olivia's intervention.
Olivia sends Quinn to negotiate for a price to take back the pictures. Huck however has been hiding in Olivia's apartment, away from Quinn since the incident of the Juror last season. Quinn bought all the pictures except for one who was riding a motorcycle which they later suspect to be the culprit in the assassination of the Princess.
Olivia discovers that the Princess is pregnant as a result of an affair with her driver and suspects the Prince. Fitz warns her not to get involve so as not to destroy his plan but refuses and makes it clear she works for the Caldonia family. She takes this information to the Queen who didn't seem surprised by the revelation because she's the one responsible for the assassination, instead warns her not to reveal it to the Prince.
Olivia as usual does whatever she wants and tells the Prince of his mother's involvement in his wife's death. The Prince forces his mother to abdicate the throne for him to rule, thereby ruining any chances for Fitz's plan to build his air force base. Just when one trouble is over, another one begins with Sally exposing the pictures the intimate moments of Olivia and Fitz in the White House.
Episode 2 'Yes'
Terrified Olivia looks at the TV as Sally blabs on about the shocking pictures of Fitz and Olivia in the White House. Fitz who still looks shocks and confused calms her down, tells her to wait so that he can find what happened. Fitz barges into Elizabeth's office, demanding that an investigation be conducted to find out the source of the leak. Abby tells him they need to do damage control first by addressing the public. Fitz insists they wait for him and Olivia to decide the next step. By the time he came back Olivia is nowhere to be found. Fitz calls Olivia to know where she is. Olivia goes through the tunnel to escape the paparazzi and tells Fitz not to call her for now.
Rather than hiding and waiting for the news to cool off, Olivia gets back to work and take a case of a Teenager, Gavin, who was charged for his father's mother and skips bail. She takes the field work while Huck and Quinn focus on locating his whereabouts.
Quinn and Huck's relationship is still sour since the incident. Huck tells her Jake cured him but she didn't believe him. Olivia locates Gavin in a Casino who still insists he's innocent, blaming his step mother because she's twice his father's age. Jake meets up with Olivia so that they can take Gavin home before the police discovers he skipped bail. Unfortunately, they lost him when someone recognizes Olivia from the TV. After a thorough investigation, it turns out that Gavin actually killed his father because he discovered he's been forging his signature to steal from him. Olivia locates him in a house he was building using his father's stolen money and hands him off to the police.
Back at the White House, Fitz suspects Mellie as the source of the leak, he warns her that if found guilty, she'll go to jail for leaking confidential photos. Fitz assigns David Rosen to lead the investigation. All roads point to Mellie put Fitz didn't care anymore since he decide put his hatred aside to save Olivia by bringing Mellie back to the White House and pretend to be a happy couple.
Abby discovers that it was Elizabeth that actually leaked the photos, rather than threatening to get her fired, she just wants one thing from her; Respect.
Olivia and Jake are on their way back when she hears a voicemail from Fitz telling her what he decided to do because she's not ready for their relationship to go public. They arrive at her apartment and she's welcomed by reporters. One them asks if she's the president's mistress, she paused for eight seconds and replies, 'Yes.'
Episode 3 '"Paris is Burning"
Just as Olivia is addressing the reporters, confirming her affair with the President, the White House is preparing for an exclusively interview starring Fitz and Mellie denying the affair. Knowing that stopping the interview will arouse suspicious, Abby comes up with a false threat using the security detail to lure Fitz and Millie away.
Both confused of the situation, they turn to the TV only to see Olivia admitting to the affair. Mellie is enraged and Fitz looks calm as ever, in fact happy. Olivia arrives at the White House but didn't receive a warm welcome, especially from Mellie since this scandal will affect her public image. Olivia apologizes for her statement but Fitz is glad she did it.
Fitz insists they do the interview but Mellie refuses to do it. Abby tires to convince her but interrupted by Cyrus who will stand as an advocate for Mellie in the negotiations if they want her to participate in the interview. Cyrus excludes Elizabeth and insists he only negotiate with Abby.
Mellie will do the interview and agree to the divorce only if Fitz supports her bid for the presidency and his relationship with Olivia will remain discreet until she wins the election. After much hesitation, Fitz finally agrees but Mellie's rage is a personal since she still unsatisfied with the demand. Cyrus meets Fitz directly and advises him to take Mellie back to solve the problem. Olivia bumps into Mellie who is looking for the hooch she stashed around the house. She gives her a glimpse of her life with the President; been ignored all the time.
Fitz finally apologizes to Mellie, they settled their differences and agreed to do the interview. Cyrus meets with Fitz. He apologizes for helping command and begged for his job back but he blatantly refused. Due to the rejection, Cyrus manipulates Mellie into thinking she's been used by Fitz. Mellie fell for it and leaves the White House with Cyrus. Left without an option Abby addresses the press and paints Olivia as a seductress with a reputation for seducing powerful men. Olivia tells Fitz it's okay and no matter what happens, she will always choose him.
Thoughts
I wouldn't want to Olivia Pope this season. Everyone knows the all favours will be on the wife and the mistress will be trashed by the public. This works for Mellie's image because public sympathy may even get her elected as President.
We get to see the other side of Cyrus this season. Having him as a friend is not advisable but as an enemy,
he is far more dangerous. His goal at the moment is to destroy Fitz and Olivia and what better way to achieve them but to use the wife who is been cheated on.
Jake's visiting Rowan in prison means something big is about to happen. It's refreshing that the affair won't be the only focus.
Even though others fail to admit it, Olivia and Fitz's relationship is toxic. It's just a ticking time bomb. with Mellie and Cyrus out for blood, no happily ever after anytime soon.
